If you’re looking to become a safe and skilled Victorian motorcyclist, then Ride-Tek MTA offers all the required steps.

Course License MelbourneYOUR SAFETY IS OUR BUSINESS!

Ride-Tek MTA has been training Victorian motorcyclists for over 20 years and is one of the highest-ranked, Vicroads-accredited training providers in Victoria, offering a fully comprehensive range of courses suitable for all levels of riding.

We have always adopted the philosophy of “Teaching Real-World Safe Riding Skills” rather than simply teaching students how to pass a test. Whether you are a complete newbie to the world of motorcycling, or you’ve been at it for years, but need a refresher course, and/or some roadcraft skills, we can assist you with all of the safety and knowledge requirements you need.

Check out some of our available motorcycle courses below. Each course is designed to be comprehensive and all-inclusive, giving you the training you need to gain the required skills for you to be safe and legal.

Learners Permit (MPA)

The Learners Permit Course is essential to get your motorcycle journey underway.

The 2 day Vicroads Accredited Learners Permit Course is designed to equip you with the knowledge and resources needed to be considered a legal and safe rider. Ride-Tek MTA will provide coaching in safe riding techniques and you will be progressively trained and assessed throughout the two days. We will provide the motorcycle or scooter (your preference), for the 2 day course, helmet, gloves and wet weather gear (if required) The training is held at our off-road training centre at Sandown Raceway, conveniently located at Noble Park, between Melbourne and Dandenong.

Check that you are eligible to apply for the Learners Permit Course

  • Cognitive and defensive skills which will enable you to ride safely in “real-world” environments and to make sound safety decisions when riding
  • An on-road and off-road assessment

Your motorcycle knowledge test is a paper-based test consisting of 32 questions. You’ll need to answer 25 multiple choice questions correctly to pass (78% pass mark).

To assist you in passing the knowledge test you should read the Victorian Rider Handbook prior to Day 1 of your course.

If you have successfully completed the 2 day course you will be provided with a receipt that will permit you to ride a LAMS-*approved motorcycle immediately. The Vicroads permit takes about 4-6 weeks to be sent to your address.

What is LAMS? – Learner-Approved Motorcycle Scheme Motorcycle learner permit and licence holders who are on a restricted licence are limited to riding Scooters and Motorcycles that are approved under the Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme.

Check Ride (CR)

Check Ride is a mandatory motorcycle training course that is required for all motorcyclists in order to complete training under the Graduated Licencing Scheme (GLS). This is a course that must be taken after you receive your learners permit, but before you receive your actual motorcycle license. The Check Ride is part of the GLS and provides an excellent opportunity for learners permit holders to obtain additional rider training and feedback on their riding.

A Check Ride is a half-day coaching course that includes an Off-road review, on our range at Sandown, of your low speed maneuvering skills, your braking and steering and On-road coaching ride on a predetermined route.

You can actually take as many Check Rides as you would like to gain confidence.

The course takes about 3.5 hours to complete, and upon completion you will have all of the necessary knowledge needed to take the Motorcycle License Assessment. You can look forward to taking the final Licence Assessment one month after you complete your Check Ride course, providing that you have held your Learner Permit for at least three months at that time.

The Check Ride Course can also be used as a Refresher Course.

If you already hold your licence but haven’t ridden for a while and want to advance and refresh your skills, then this is the course for you. When you’ve been holding on to your licence for a while without actively riding, you will tend to forget some of the most important safety practices and riding techniques.

This course takes about 3.5 hours, and refreshes your skillset on some of the most important and necessary riding techniques which include:

  • Lane positioning
  • Usage of all motorcycle controls
  • Crash avoidance space
  • Buffering in traffic
  • Identifying crash hazards
  • Correct use of mirrors

Motorcycle License Assessment (MLA)

The Motorcycle License Assessment is the final mandatory step required under the M-GLS. It is an intensive, all-comprehensive assessment that takes about 1.5 hours to complete. It serves as an exam, rather than a formal training course. Students who are ready to take this assessment have already completed previous courses and assessments such as the Learner Permit Course and the Check Ride and have ridden for at least three months on their learners permit.

The assessment is one-on-one with one of our instructors. The student can expect a diagnostic skills ride on our training range, so that the instructor can properly assess your base skills, followed by the on-road assessment.

On the road assessment the instructor will look for skills such as effective crash avoidance space, proper control usage, buffering in traffic, and more. Upon passing the assessment, you will receive your motorcycle licence receipt!
